Exhaust Manifold

As I stated in my last post, Change your Impellers! a $30 part cost me much more. Being cheap I only changed mine when I needed to. Not a good Idea. I will change them every year without fail. Overheated, cracked the exhaust manifold, blew the head gasket. Here are the replacement parts at some great prices.

Volvo Penta pt# 3858870 $499-608 oem
Replacement pt# OMC-1-3858850 Barr Marine $275.00 plus $30 shipping to San Diego Ca.

Tim at manifoldwarehouse.com Hooked me up. Direct Link Here now the website says $333
but call them and ask for a better price. By the way don't be afraid  to ask parts dealers for
better pricing the worst they can do is say is no.

Starters

Finding starters online for my Volvo Penta 3.0gl was easy. Prices range from $50-200 each. I Found a great shop on Ebay that had them in stock and shipped right a way.

Manufacture part #  TM000A24301

Ebay Seller urqualitysolutions  Link to Ebay page 57.89

UPDATE:
I just rebuilt my old starter, it took me about one hour and cost was nothing. As I found out most marine starter problems are rust in the brushes and on the windings. The starter is a 3 part starter.
1: Solenoid
Comes off with 2 screws just cleaned the plunger and cylinder (had some rust)
2: Gear Head
Comes off with 2 long bolts, Sorry I didnt take any pictures of it but its easy to remove. When you do you will find 3 gears and a single ball barring. Dont loose any of them. Just clean the gears and re-lube. The ball barring goes as the end of the shaft between the bushing and the armature.

3: Motor
Just remove the amature from the body and clean, Mine had rust on the windings/magnets but not much, Most was in the brushes. You can remove them from the cap with 2 screws. If you need new brushes you can find them at your local auto shop, but they might not have the brush springs so you might have to replace them with the old ones.

Easy step to get the brushes back on the armature, use a socket that is just a bit bigger than the armature slide the brushes over the socket then place it on the armature. Slide the brushes down the socket on to the armature. Sorry again no pictures.

Assemble and you are ready to go!
I found this guy on Youtube, the starter is pretty close but not the same one on our Volvo Penta 3.0 you will notice the gear and head are different but the body and motor are the same. He gives a great demo but is hard to understand with his accent.

Idler Pulley

After changing the water pumps I noticed that the Idler Pulleys were making some noise, I don't have the manufacture part numbers but I have the replacement parts found at my local auto parts store.

Auto Zone pt# 231051
and                  231088

Both are a perfect match.  Thanks to my local store for going through all their boxes to match them up for me.

Water Pump

My SeaRay has two Penta 3.0's so anytime I need parts I buy two. Last week I needed a new water pump, now not the sea or raw water pump I needed a new circulation pump the one on the block. I called around and found them from $100-286 bucks at the local boat shops. But my Local Napa had them for $24.99, no kidding. They were for a Chrysler but they fit and look the same. I installed them and they work fine. One difference is the blades are steel instead of cast.

Original Part# 3858340
Napa Replacement # 42085

Some changes you may need to do, The Heater port is open on this part, I bought a cap that fits great and a hose clamp. Total cost of $11 bucks to do both pumps. (two engines)

Volvo Penta 3.0 GL Cross over List

I am writing this blog because I am tired of paying Boat Store prices for engine parts for my Penta 3.0l engines. As most of you know the engines were made by chevy and have mostly interchangeable parts. The following is a list of parts I have found at my local auto parts store that fit and work just fine for my boat. I hope they help you.
